Stem cells hold cure for deadly skin diseases.

London : For those who suffer from skin blisters or have chances of developing skin tumours, there is cure in the offing – in stem cell-based gene therapy, says IANS.

Until today, no treatment was available for people with genetic skin disorder known as epidermolysis bullosa (EB), but gene therapy may have an answer to their problem.
Researchers at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy, after evaluating a patient suffering from EB who underwent gene therapy treatment, found that skin stem cells transplanted into the patient’s legs restored normal skin function, without causing any side-effects.
“These findings pave the way for the future safe use of epidermal stem cells for combined cell and gene therapy of epidermolysis bullosa and other genetic skin diseases,” Michele De Luca, senior study author, said.
The team extracted a small number of skin stem cells from the patient’s palm, corrected the genetic defect in these cells and then transplanted these into the upper legs. The patient’s upper legs looked normal and did not show signs of blisters and there was no evidence of tumour development.
“This finding suggests that adult stem cells primarily regenerate the tissue in which they normally reside, with little plasticity to regenerate other tissues. This research highlights the need to carefully choose the right type of stem cell for therapeutic tissue regeneration,” the study, published in the journal Stem Cell Reports, emphasised.
EB is a painful condition that causes the skin to be very fragile and to blister easily, and it can also cause life-threatening infections. Because there is no cure for the disease, current treatment strategies focus on relieving symptoms.

Can We Store Electricity From Lightening ?

It is theoretically possible to store and harness the electricity from lightning, and several proposals have been advanced to show how this could be done. There are a number of reasons which make these proposals impractical, however. Lightning is simply not a good source of energy, and there are numerous alternatives which are safer, less energy-intensive, more effective, and readily available. In other words, just because humans can potentially and highly theoretically store electricity from lightning doesn't mean that they should.
On the surface, lightning seems to have a lot of potential as an energy source. It is totally renewable, which is a definite advantage, and it is readily available in some regions of the world. Furthermore, lightning has a lot of energy; a single bolt can power 150 million light bulbs. The idea of harnessing so much energy and storing it is immensely appealing.
There are a number of problems with trying to harness the tremendous energy of lightning bolts. The first is that lightning is highly unpredictable. There is no way to know exactly where and when lightning will strike, so it would be difficult to find a location to turn into a facility for processing lightning for energy. Lightning also delivers its energy all at once, which would require huge batteries and capacitors. Otherwise, the energy would simply blow out any systems established to capture it.

Important Information For All Bikers ... Must Share

Hi friends

This is a freak incident that happened recently.

A young man and his 4 yr old son went to a petrol bunk near Lal bagh (Bangalore) to fill in petrol for his bike. The boy was sitting on the pillion behind him.

The helper who fills petrol held the petrol gun upwards, and turned towards the meter to re-set the meter. As soon as the setting was done the petrol came out gushing out of the gun - due to some malfunction - (at least that's what they said) in full speed and splashed all over the 4 yr old boy and his father.

Petrol entered the eyes of the boy. Immediately the boy was taken into the cleaning area and was showered in a water jet. They washed his eyes with lot of water. But the boy could not see anything.

The young man took the child to the hospital and immediately the hospital authorities put him in ICU. The kid was then transferred to Vittala Netralaya and after 2 days of treatment he got some vision again. Now he is all right and is at home.

The doctors told that just because the water cleaning was done immediately, he has vision today otherwise the boy would have been blind by now. Petrol (along with impurities) can burn the tissues inside the eye.

Now why am I posting this? Please take some precautions next time you are at a petrol bunk.

1. If the engine was in running condition, this could have caused a major Fire. So Switch off the engine in bunks.

2. Drop small kids and the person sitting behind you outside the bunk and fill in petrol. Kids are more sensitive than grown ups.

3. Ask the petrol bunk helper boy to hold the gun down. Even if there is such an accident let the petrol flow down and not on your face.

4. Share this post to everyone and make them aware..

For Those Who Love Wildlife Wildlife photography is the act of taking photographs of wildlife.
Wildlife photography is regarded as one of the more challenging forms of photography. As well as needing sound technical skills, such as being able to expose correctly, wildlife photographers generally need good field craft skills. For example, some animals are difficult to approach and thus a knowledge of the animal's behavior is needed in order to be able to predict their actions. Photographing some species may require stalking skills or the use of a hide/blind for concealment. While wildlife photographs can be taken using basic equipment, successful photography of some types of wildlife requires specialist equipment, such as macro lenses for insects, long focal length lenses for birds and underwater cameras for marine life. However, a great wildlife photograph can also be the result of being in the right place at the right time. In the early days of photography, it was almost impossible to get a photograph of wildlife, due to the slow lenses and the low sensitivity of early photographic media.
